Movie: NIGHT WATCH

Night_watch

The Movie: Night Watch is the first instalment of a trilogy based on the best-selling Russian sci-fi novels of Sergei Lukyanenko (which also includes Day Watch and Dusk Watch). This visionary horror fantasy film is set in present-day Moscow and features a dazzling mix of mind-blowing effects, adrenaline-fuelled action and suspenseful terror.

More than 1000 years ago a truce was struck between Gesser, Lord of the Light, and Zavulon, General of Darkness. They agreed that no one could be forced to be good or evil, people must choose freely for themselves. To uphold this truce, each side established underground forces; the soldiers of the Light would be called Night Watch, making sure Dark Others obeyed the truce. And the soldiers of Darkness would be called Day Watch, to do the same.

Ancient prophecy foretells that one day the Great One will arrive who can end the great of an apocalyptic battle between Light and Dark Others. In Night Watch, that day has come, and the Great One must choose whether to destroy the light within or battle the surrounding darkness. This choice will reveal mankind’s destiny.

Conclusion: Huh? Ok, visuals were great, acting "looked" good, dialog NO IDEA! Apparently it was a fight between good and evil, and the choices people make.

This movie was very dark, mainly because it was Russian!!! – I was a little surprised to find out that the whole movie was in Russian, both in location and language.. Subtitles were avaliable, but didn’t help the complicated plot. This is the first part of a trilogy – sorry but I won’t be seeing the others.

Just to clarify, I’m not putting the film down because it had subtitles (this will be the third film now), but I felt that although the plot was easy to follow, the sub-plot and the character interaction was somewhat marred by having to read the subtitles to keep up..

The were-rabbits of the world be warned..

Wandg

The movie: In "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit," they face their greatest challenge. Lady Tottington is holding her family’s 517th annual Giant Vegetable Fete, and all the gardeners for miles around are lovingly caressing their gigantic melons and zucchinis and carrots and such, and Wallace and Gromit are responsible for security, which means keeping rabbits out of the garden patches.

Conclusion: Wow! another winner from Aardman. This is a fantastic movie for young and old, the kids will love it, where as the bigger kids will love the inuendo’s and the humour. Animation is great, and well worth the wait. Certainly one for the DVD collection when it comes out, and a favourite that will here for years to come. "Cracking good show Gromit!"

Brother and soul

Fourbrothers

Synopsis:
Following their adoptive mother’s murder in a grocery store holdup, the Mercer brothers – hotheaded Bobby (Mark Wahlberg), hard-edged Angel (Tyrese Gibson), family and business man Jeremiah (André Benjamin), and hard rocking Jack (Garrett Hedlund) – reunite to avenge her death. As they track down the killer they quickly realise that their old ways of doing business have new consequences.

Conclusion: This is a real gritty film, the story of four adopted brothers – 2 white, 2 black. It’s intreging story of how the four brothers take the law into their own hands trying to find the murders of their foster mother. All four boys bear the scars of their troubled, pre-adoption lifestyles but their edges are softened, touched forever by the love of a woman who saw more than just street gang thugs. Skin color ignored, the four are bound tightly together and fight like brothers, whether with each other or against anyone who stands in their way.

Four Brothers isn’t a great action movie, nor is it amiserable disaster. It’s a middle of the road film with a perfectly understated message about the importance of brotherly love and the unimportance of skin color. Folks willing to accept the heavy violence and rough language will enjoy an oddly formed family story that’s not afraid to take chances and fail.

Green Street

Greenstreethooligans

Synopsis:
Journalism student Matt Buckner (Elijah Wood) has been expelled from Harvard for a crime he didn’t commit. His promising career ended and his future looking bleak, he heads for London to seek refuge with his married sister Shannon (Claire Forlani) and her husband Steve (Marc Warren).

Steve introduces Matt to his younger brother Pete (Charlie Hunnam) and, through their friendship, Matt enters the world of football fanaticism and the secrecy and intrigue of the football firm.

Pete Dunham and his close knit group of friends make up the Green Street Elite (GSE), a hard core group of West Ham United supporters – and one of the toughest London football firms. All the football clubs have a firm and they all have one aim – to be the most feared and respected mob in the country – no matter what it takes. As Pete explains ‘West Ham’s football is mediocre, but our firm’s top notch and everyone knows it… it’s really about reputation – humiliating the other mob by beating them in a row or doing things that other firms get to hear about.’ Matt is not only drawn into the sheer excitement of the game of football itself, but also the brotherhood and loyalty of life inside the GSE. The buzz that violence brings to him produces a sense of power that he has never before experienced.

But Matt has been sparring with the truth about his past life and not every member of the firm considers him a ‘brother’. Bovver (Leo Gregory), resents the presence of the outsider and his own apparent demotion within the ranks of the GSE. His continuing distrust and dislike of Matt creates a powder keg of jealousy and emotion that’s just searching for an opportunity to blow.

When Bovver discovers hidden information about Matt it sets off a devastating chain of events that tests friendship, loyalty, honor and determination in battle. Tragic consequences force Matt to acknowledge the cost of his actions and the painful lessons learned lead him to re-evaluate his future.

Conclusion: This is an enjoyable film, although I think many agree that the "Hobbit" (Elijah Wood) is in no way believeable as a football hooligan! He still looks about 12yrs old even though he managed to squeeze out a goatie! The rest of the characters are 100% believable – showing the true darker side of the football fanatic. Britian is known for these famous exports – football hooligans, the film is believable, and seems more like a fly on the wall documentary than fiction. Not everyones cup of tea, but worth seeing all the same.

Here we are at the weekends second movie "The Island", what’s the movie about?

"Lincoln Six-Echo (McGregor) is a resident of a seemingly utopian but contained facility in the mid 21st century.

Like all of the inhabitants of this carefully controlled environment, Lincoln hopes to be chosen to go to the "The Island" – reportedly the last uncontaminated spot on the planet. But Lincoln soon discovers that everything about his existence is a lie. He and all of the other inhabitants of the facility are actually human clones whose only purpose is to provide "spare parts" for their original human counterparts.

Realizing it is only a matter of time before he is "harvested," Lincoln makes a daring escape with a beautiful fellow resident named Jordan Two-Delta (Johansson). Relentlessly pursued by the forces of the sinister institute that once housed them, Lincoln and Jordan engage in a race for their lives to literally meet their makers."

Conclusion: Interesting movie, maybe set way into the future – then again, maybe not? A bit like the Matrix, but then again – maybe not.

Generally I found the movie entertaining, with plenty of action and of course a car chase thrown in for good measure. The characters were certainly believable, and the story flowed well throughout, building up the story of a contaminated world in the future, and then ripping it down to explore the true realities of what the characters existence truly entails. See it!

Mad Dog? Unleashed, the movie

Unleashed

Rated at 18 "Unleashed", is a fantastic film whats it about?

"This is the story of Danny (Li), a slave who has lived his whole life without any sort of normal human education, with the mind and personality of a young child, with only one lesson learned: how to fight. Treated like a dog by his owner/boss, Bart(Hoskins), Danny has been raised to be a lethal fighting machine earning money for Bart as the undisputed champion in  the illegal fight club circuit. After a car accident that lands Bart in a coma, Danny meets a kind elderly blind piano tuner(Freeman) on the run who uses music to teach Danny some things about the world and about being human."

Conclusion: This is a fantastic movie, based in Glasgow in the UK – it has a fantastic story, Danny is the short "heavy", trained by Bart to be a killing machine, or perhaps a human pit bull. Li plays this tough little killing machine, who once seperated from his "uncle" Bart begins to redescover his humanity with the help of a blind piano tuner played by Freeman and his duaghter. It’s a great story, and a great film go see it!

Conclusion: What can I say – this is a classic "Herbie" movie, and the same mold, and guess what it’s still a winner!

For those of you who have never seen a Herbie movie before, you’re in for a treat – the first couple of minutes are clips from pervious movies showing the the little love-bugs antics. But Herbie has fallen of bad times, and find Herbie in the scrap yard waiting to be crushed! The story follows the tried and tested Disney reciepe – its a winner for kids of all ages (providing you like Disney films)..
