Starbucks letdown
Posted by martin newham in Musings on August 30, 2008
Just in Croydon (picture at Surrey Street Market), and it’s damn hot; almost 30 degrees Celsius. But why the SB letdown? Their ice machine Is broken, gah! So I had to have a nice hot Latte instead.
Work has been short and sweet especially when you only worked two days last week, needless to say there was stuff waiting for me when I returned last Thursday.
Family is all well (as can be expected) and I’m sure the A/C will be on when I get home.

Thought I’d try out the new Starbucks in Sutton; certainly a lot bigger than the other one which I can see from the door, lot more arm chairs – but, hasn’t got that homely lived in feel yet. Of course the style and look is identical to the others.
The drinks? My Strawberry’s and Cream Frappachino seems a little unfinished, as us the piles of used plates and mugs at my table. Believe me when I say that usually the cream that typically crowns my drink is attempting to escape the dome.
Well, back to the old Starbucks, and I’ll wait for this one to; how we say "bed in".
Well quite a productive day

Been upgrading some web sites for ACM as well as the web servers GUI (Plesk). Backed all the files, FTP’d them back home which took most of the day, cleared down the old site, and uploaded the new version. Hit the update button and 3 minutes later it was done!
While I was backing up the site (yawn) and preparing for the update I discovered TweetDeck an Adobe Air application which works as a TWITTER client. I’ve been using it for most of the day now and its really great!
I especially like the search options where it will monitor the thousands of posts an hour for key words in the picture below “iPhone”, “Drupal” are shown. If you have a Twitter account give it a try…

Today I needed to catch up on my movies at my local Vue cinema; the two in question were "The Mummy III: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" and "Wall-e".
The Mummy III: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Synopsis: Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China's ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have lain forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O'Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents.
Disney/Pixars: Wall-e
Synopsis: In a distant, but not so unrealistic future, where mankind has abandoned earth because it has become covered with trash from products sold by the powerful multi-national Buy N Large corporation, WALL-E, a garbage collecting robot has been left to clean up the mess. Mesmerized with trinkets of earth's history and show tunes, WALL-E is alone on Earth except for a sprightly pet cockroach.
One day, Eve, a sleek (and dangerous) reconnaissance robot, is sent to earth to find proof that life is once again sustainable. WALL-E falls in love with Eve. WALL-E rescues Eve from a dust storm and shows her a living plant he found amongst the rubble. Consistent with her "directive" Eve takes the plant and automatically enters a deactivated state except for a blinking green beacon. WALL-E, doesn't understand what has happened to his new friend, but true to his love, he protects her from wind, rain, and lightening, even as she is unresponsive. One day a massive ship comes to reclaim Eve, but WALL-E, out of love or loneliness hitches a ride on the outside of the ship to rescue Eve.
The ship arrives back at a large space cruise ship, which is carrying all of the humans who evacuated earth 700 years earlier. The people of earth ride around this space resort on hovering chairs which give them a constant feed of TV and video chatting. They drink all of their meals through a straw out of laziness and/or bone loss, and are all so fat that they can barely move. When the auto-pilot computer, acting on hastily given instructions sent many centuries before, tries to prevent the people of earth from returning, by stealing the plant, WALL-E, Eve, the portly captain, and a band of broken robots stage a mutiny.

First week back, and after wading through the emails things started to pick up again. Requests for additional builds and repeat work was good. Sad thing was I was sitting in the office by myself for most of the time!
Blogging from the iPhone should be easy but I’m still getting to grips with the keyboard GAH!
