IoW day6, East Side

All the times I’ve been to the Isle and today I’m did three new things; visited The Museum of Island HistoryFlamingo Park and travelled on the Steam Railway.

I had to go through Newport to get to the Steam Railway, it was then I spotted the Museum of Island History; and more importantly a parking space!

Inside there was quite a surprise, it charted when the Island was born; or separated from the mainland through the dinosaurs, settlers, Romans, Victorians etc… and there was a lot of touchy feely exhibits and experiments to try out.

Did you know the common or garden tin opener was invented on the Isle of Wight by Henry Knight of Ryde in the 19th Century?

… and the first ever hovercraft was built in in Cowes in 1958?

… and Thrust2 which broke the Land Speed Record at 633.846 mph was built and designed in Wootton Creek.

With this new enlightenment I travelled East again to Havenstreet which is the main station for the islands Steam Railway, its also the home of a famous steam train can you guess by looking at the picture below?

There are loads of pictures of steam, trains, and the green, green fields of the Isle, so I’ll just post a few;

It was time to jump back into the Beetle and go further East to Seaview home of Seaview Wildlife Encounter;

Arrived at Seaview Wildlife Encounter (Flamingo Park) around 3pm and spent the rest of the day wandering around the park talking to the birds and other animals. They were all very tame and always expecting food that you could buy at the entrance.

Here are some of my favourite snaps;
