… and that’s because?

As I was travelling to Sutton today, my internal organs lurching from left to right as travelled down the rough uneven roads we have to put up with, not to mention the numerous suspension shattering speed bumps – I asked myself “why should it be like this?”

With far more cars on the road, each one having to pay inflated road tax for the “up keep” of the road network; where was all the money going? There certainly wasn’t in increase in the number of roads, and the quality of the surfaces and repairs haven’t increased.

Years back I remember roads being taken out for a week at a time when labourers manually stripped the old surface, and truck upon truck arrived with tarmac and it was raked and rolled manually. Today a machine comes along and strips the surface in a day, another lays, rackes and rolls the surface all within a couple of days and with just a handful of people.

So tell me why are our roads so bad? Where is all the money going?

Answers on a postcard – please.
