… and that’s because?
Posted by martin newham in Musings on January 27, 2008
As I was travelling to Sutton today, my internal organs lurching from left to right as travelled down the rough uneven roads we have to put up with, not to mention the numerous suspension shattering speed bumps – I asked myself “why should it be like this?”
With far more cars on the road, each one having to pay inflated road tax for the “up keep” of the road network; where was all the money going? There certainly wasn’t in increase in the number of roads, and the quality of the surfaces and repairs haven’t increased.
Years back I remember roads being taken out for a week at a time when labourers manually stripped the old surface, and truck upon truck arrived with tarmac and it was raked and rolled manually. Today a machine comes along and strips the surface in a day, another lays, rackes and rolls the surface all within a couple of days and with just a handful of people.
So tell me why are our roads so bad? Where is all the money going?
Answers on a postcard – please.
iPod Touch
Posted by martin newham in Apple, Web/Tech on January 27, 2008
Well, a busy day; mainly getting postal stuff to send some eBay sales to their new owners, and I always forget to add package costs to the final value – D’oh!
Want to pop into Sutton on Sunday to see if I can track down a new CD (MOS: The Rush), wasn’t going to pay £15 for it in Zavvi.
Give you an update later…
Something nice…

… my iPod touch is quickly becoming central in my gadget life (sad I know). Initially it was a nice looking media player; but since the release of the iPhone apps to the iTouch (as I quite often call it) its become even more functional and a great tool.
I’m able to check my email, search to directions and businesses using maps, check the weather and laugh at Apples declining stocks. All very well I hear you say, I can do that from my computer – but this is more convenient – providing (this is the spanner in the works) there is a wifi connection. Great at home, but quickly gets demoted to a fancy media player on the road. Of course I could opt for a iPhone, with half the memory slow network connection £35 a month for the next 18 months? At this time in it’s life I can say no thanks. Make it 3G, with 32GB and a sensible price/contract and I’ll look at it again.
In the meantime I’m in iTouch heaven…
I don’t understand…

… and it bugs me.
Well those who know me know I understand how technology works, or the principles, but this one has me stumped.
Apple released the same applications (almost) for the iPod Touch that are on the iPhone. Here's the crunch, on Google Maps on both the iPhone and Touch is a "Locate me" button which on the iPhone checks it's nearest mobile cell and then shows where you are on a map; no problem – I understand how this works. On the Touch it works equally well although it only has WIFI access. When I tried it at home I though it was doing something sneaky like checking the contacts to see where my home was, but on the way to work I attached to a number of unsecured WIFI AP's and still it was able to find me. I'm in Croydon at the moment connected to "theCloud.net" and it correctly identified my location. The freaky thing is it's acurate down to 2-300yrds better than the mobile cell method!
Help me figure this out, answers on a postcard please….
Chillin’ with the smokers..
Posted by martin newham in Musings on January 12, 2008
Just another SB post, “today I will mostly be drinking my hazelnut latte with the smokers”… Yes, its hot and busy inside so I’m outside having a latte outside – cool.
I’m still undecided about my new laptop, OQO, HTC Shift, or maybe a newly announced MacBook (Mac Show next week)…
Going to be busy over the next coupke of weeks, one of our clients is upgrading so new servers need to be built – yay!
Family doing ok at the moment, talk next time…
1st blog of the year…

… yeah, I know it’s the 6th but I forgot to post!
Back in SB’s drinking a hazelnut latte, nice; but not in Sutton or Croydon – I’m in Kingston!
Got some new kit to suppliment my iMac, an Elgato EyeTV. Has twin digital tuners built into a USB dongle which means its able to view/record two tv channels or combine the signals to produce a single good signal.
The tv software functions, but is a long, long way from Microsoft Media Centre – I would estimate a good 3-5 years behind.
Maybe I’ll load up Media Centre and see what I makes of it.
Back to work for serious next week, the change freeze will be lifted and it will be back to normal again.
